One of the bad things that have happened in 2016 is deterioration of internet freedom. Censorship got worse than it ever did in the recent past. The European Union was first.

It created severe internet neutrality regulations to control internet freedom. Shortly after, the US curbed its internet usage. A few months back, Turkey, China, India and Russia banned the use of social media websites. Surveillance seems like a global thing now.

Statistics on the Freedom on the Net 2016 report are discouraging

Statistics show that internet freedom has been reducing for six years in a row. The researchers gathered their data from sixty-five nations. This is where the eighty-eight percent of internet users live. China, Syria, and Iran have already controlled their citizens’ online activities. Users cannot use Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter or Viber.

Messaging apps’ users are already feeling the wrath of the governments. According to the report, China is the main abuser of internet freedom. The USA government has improved, though. Its netizens will feel the relief when the Freedom Act passes. It will restrict the National Security Agency’s data collection practices.

The report showed that the internet freedom score declined in thirty-four nations. This is more than fifty percent of the sample, the researchers used. In 2016 alone, twenty-four nations blocked access to social media sites.

This is a rise from just 15 in 2015. WhatsApp is the worst affected of all apps. It is unavailable in 12 nations, including China, of course.

Sanja Kelly, the report’s co-author, wasn’t pleased. He said the blockage will hit the human rights professionals the most.

How to resist government censorship

Netizens are sad; it is a fact. But, there is a solution. It is none other than VPN service. It swaps your IP address for a fake one.

Hence, the government surveillance will only see the pseudo-IP address. Besides, encrypts your confidential data. It protects you from hackers and identity thieves.

This VPN guarantees your privacy and security when browsing. The process of setting it up is easy. First, you will need to select your Operating System. It could be Windows, Linux or Mac OS.

Also, it could be a mobile OS such as Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone or iOS device. After selecting, follow instructions to download and install VPN.
